Great Rift Valley Lakes and Omo Valley Tribes with extension to Harar    16 days Wild Wild Nature, Ethnic Groups, Tribes and Cultural Legacy

This trip to Ethiopia not only combines the natural beauty of the Rift Valley Lakes with tropical landscapes that harbor very extensive coffee plantations, the vastness of the savannah in the Omo Valley or the high mountain peaks of the Bale Mountains, but also culminates with a visit to the walled city of Harar, the most important Muslim enclave of East Africa during the past 1000 years and well-known throughout the country for its busy and colorful markets, not to mention the huge market of chat. During the first few days of this trip take you to the Great Rift Valley lakes inhabited by crocodiles, hippos and hundreds of bird species.

The tribal villages are further south. Tribes with ancestral ways of life will open the door of their villages to meet them and admire the beauty of their esthetic beauties: The Karo, Banna, Dassenech, Tsemay, Hamer and Mursi are the tribes we will meet. However, they are not the only people we will encounter in this trip, also the Dorzepeople on our way to Arba Minch, the Konso people, the Ari villages around Jinka, the Borena people in Yabelo and the Oromo, the guardians of coffee.

Before driving east, we will ascend to the Bale Mountains National Park to gaze at the high steep peaks interrupted by streams and waterfalls and scattered by forests inhabited by endemic animals of Ethiopia such as the Mountain Nyala, the Ethiopian wolf, the Menelik Bushbuck and other mammals, such as the Bale monkey, the Columbus monkey, the Velvet monkey. The bird life in Bale Mountains is rewarding for birders.

The Awash National Park is astonishing due to its bizarre Savannah landscape full of petrified volcanic lava rivers and scattered with acacias, whose shadow i hides its most famous inhabitants, the wild orix.

Finally we will reach the walled town of Harar known as the most important Muslim enclave of east Africa during the last thousand years. It is appreciated all over the country for its busy and colorful markets and, of course, its big chat market. After flying back to Addis Ababa we will enjoy a traditional Ethiopian dinner with music and dancing performance as goodbye end of this great trip.
